What did you think of Captain America: Civil War?

By Alex Wiggan

Marvel Studios’ latest blockbuster, Captain America: Civil War has arrived in cinemas, pitting superhero against superhero in an all-out war. The film – which is a sequel to both Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) & Avengers: Age of Ulton (2015) – is Marvel Studios’ 13th adventure movie and continues the current trend of grand scale team-up movies (Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, X-Men: Days of Future Past etc).

But is it any good?

Well this is just a small sample of what the critics have to say.

Variety’s Justin Chang, described Captain America: Civil War as a “decisively superior hero-vs.-hero extravaganza that also ranks as the most mature and substantive picture to have yet emerged from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.” Meanwhile, Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian described the movie as “a huge aspartame rush of a film: a giant irresistible snack, not nutritious, but very tasty.”

Cinemablend, The Telegraph and Empire have all given the film a five star rating (out of five), with Empire’s reviewer Dan Jolin, commenting that it matches “its blockbuster scale and spectacle with the smarts of a great, grown-up thriller.”

This blog writer & long-time comic book fan would have to agree with all the positive comments that currently surround Captain America: Civil War. This is a great Marvel movie, ticking all the boxes one would expect from a solid blockbuster (action, humour, spectacle, etc), while juggling a heap of characters, the likes of which many movies fumble with.

The conflict between Cap and Iron Man is played out perfectly, with neither side coming off better than the other. This is a story that has been well thought out and it shows.

And then there’s Spider-Man, the breakout star of the movie who is a joy to watch. His participation in the movie never feels forced and provides a great set-up for his solo movie. The same can be said for Black Panther, another newbie to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

So what do you think?

Did you enjoy Captain America: Civil War? Was it everything you could have hoped for and more, or did it simply showcase one too many heroes for you? More importantly are you now excited for the next set of Marvel movies, including Doctor Strange (November 2016), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Black Panther (2018)?

Whatever your thoughts, let us know so we can debate them endlessly.
