What are the chances of Iron Man 4 going into production?

By Alex Wiggan

Would you like to see an Iron Man 4? If the answer is yes, then you’ll be pleased to know there is a strong chance it could happen. Honest.

After previously dismissing the idea of doing a fourth Iron Man movie, it would seem that Robert Downey Jr has recently had a change of heart. During an interview with ABC News to promote Captain America: Civil War, the Iron Man actor, said: “I feel like I could do one more”.

Now while this is in no way official confirmation that Iron Man 4 is on its way, it is a good sign that a fourth instalment could be on the cards.

So what are the chances of Iron Man 4 going into production?

Well, since the release of the very first Iron Man film back in 2008, the three-movie series has proved extremely profitable, with each movie continuing to out-gross the previous entry when it comes to the worldwide box office. According to The the combined worldwide take of all three Iron Man films is $2,421,091,743 – a colossal amount of money and reason enough for Marvel Studios/Disney to continue the series, so surely Iron Man 4 is a goer, right?

Well, no.

Marvel Studios has a clear plan in place for the next couple of years and while that plan has changed a couple of times in recent months (the addition of a Spidey film, the postponement of the Inhumans movie etc), it doesn’t mean the studio will suddenly greenlight another Iron Man film just because it’s main star said he would be up for making another. That said, if the actor is on board and the audience is there, then it is at least a clear indication that another film could appear sooner rather than later.

Hmm… Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

So as it stands, at present there is no official confirmation of Iron Man 4, however, we’re perhaps closer to a fourth Iron Man film than we were before. In the meantime, Robert Downey Jr will make his next appearance as Iron Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), before taking a more significant role in Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 (2018).

We guess you’ll just have to let Iron Man’s appearance in other Marvel movies tide you over, for now.
