The Honcho Round-up #61: Thor: Ragnarok – What the critics think

By Alex Wiggan

Hi heroes!

It’s movie time again and for this edition the focus is on the critical reception of big budget Marvel movie, Thor: Ragnarok!

Thor: Ragnarok is the third solo Thor film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (the 17th entry overall) and stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Cate Blanchett, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum and Anthony Hopkins. The movie is directed by Taika Waititi, arrives in UK cinemas on Tuesday 24th October (Friday 3rd November in the US) and looks like the most bonkers Marvel movie to date!

The official premier for Thor: Ragnarok took place earlier this week and while there is still an embargo on reviews, a few early reactions – including a comment from Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn – have hit social media.

If you’re a Thor/Marvel fan then you’ll be pleased to know the early buzz is very encouraging, with many commenting on just how funny the film is. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love funny?! Additional positive comments have also been offered up for Chris Hemsworth, Cate Blanchett and Jeff Goldblum.

Anyway, here’s what the critics said:

  • Yahoo Entertainment’s Senior Correspondent, Kevin Polowy, was very pleased with Thor: Ragnarok, commenting: “Thor: Ragnarok is hilarious & weird & offbeat & retro & sublime. Love how Marvel let Taika Waititi make a movie that’s Waititi-ish as hell.”
  • Gizmodo & io9 reporter, Germain Lussier, said: “Thor: Ragnarok is just plain fun. It’s hilarious from start to finish with quirky performances & exciting action. Tessa Thompson is the MVP.”
  • The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez was also positive about Thor: Ragnarok, highlighting the music as a standout element of the movie. He said: “#ThorRagnarok ABSOLUTELY ROCKS! I was totally blown away by the story, action, effects, performances & one of Marvel’s best soundtracks!”
  • Collider Editor, Haleigh Foutch, noted a slight issue with the first act of Thor: Ragnarok, but was still very positive, commenting: “#ThorRagnarok is laugh out loud funny from start to finish. Stumbles a bit in the first act, but it triumphs when it gets weird with it.”
  • CinemaBlend writer, Conner Schwerdtfeger, saved his comments for the star of Thor: Ragnarok. He said: “After seeing #ThorRagnarok I can say that @chrishemsworth’s Thor will become many people’s No.1 favourite Avenger. The guy shines in this.”
  • People Magazine’s Kara Warner, said: “#ThorRagnarok is SO much fun I almost can’t take it. The best: Thor movie, Cate Blanchett scene stealing, Jeff Goldblum Goldblum-ing.”

And finally, here’s what James Gunn thought of Thor: Ragnarok:

  • “I loved it. I sat in the ‘director’s row’ with the Jons (Favreau and Watts) and Captain Marvel’s Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, and Favreau and I laughed loudly, perhaps even inappropriately so, at nearly everything Jeff Goldblum did. In fact, I might say (Goldblum’s character) the Grandmaster is my new favourite character in the Marvel Universe.”

So, there you go; six review snippets gleamed from social media, plus an additional comment from James Gunn. Anyone else really excited to see Thor: Ragnarok?
