The Honcho Round-Up #6: What is going on with The Batman?

By Alex Wiggan

Hi heroes!

Over the last couple of week’s there have been a number of reports regarding the current state of the next Batman movie.

Is it on? Is it off?

Is Ben Affleck in? Is he out?

Keen to streamline the news a little, we thought we’d bring you a special edition of The Honcho Round-Up, giving you a better understanding of the story so far.

OK, so up until now we’ve seen Ben Affleck play Batman in two movies set within the DC Cinematic Universe (DCCU): Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Suicide Squad (2016). Moving forward, the actor will appear in at least one more DCCU movie, which is Justice League, due in cinemas this November.

Beyond these three films, Affleck ‘may appear’ in proposed Batman solo movie, The Batman; he ‘may appear’ in a sequel to Justice League; and he ‘may appear’ in one of the many planned DCCU movies (Flash, Aquaman, Black Adam etc) that Warner Bros. has in the pipeline.

We are using the phrase ‘may appear’ because at the time of writing there are various stories out there which suggest Ben Affleck’s involvement with the DCCU could be in serious doubt.

Is there any truth to these stories? We’ll let you decide, but for now here is what has happened.

  • Prior to January 2017 – Ben Affleck is confirmed as both the director and star of The Batman – a forthcoming solo Batman movie, potentially looking at a 2018 release date. Few details are given on the project, however it is confirmed that Deathstroke will be Batman’s main adversary, with Joe Manganiello taking on the villainous role.
  • January 31st 2017 – News breaks that Ben Affleck has stepped down as director of The Batman. The actor will remain in the role of the Caped Crusader. In a statement, Affleck said: “Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”
  • February 10th 2017 – The Hollywood Reporter brings news that War for the Planet of The Apes director, Matt Reeves is to take over from Ben Affleck as the director of The Batman. Ben Affleck is still on board as Batman.
  • February 10th 2017 – Comic reports that Joe Manganiello has been cast in forthcoming game-based movie adaptation, Rampage, opposite Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. Comic speculates this casting announcement could conflict with Manganiello’s role in The Batman. This news is purely speculation and no announcements are made to confirm or deny Manganiello is leaving the project.
  • February 13th 2017 – Collider Movie Talk reports that Ben Affleck no longer wants to play the role of Batman. Collider Movie Talk host, John Campea, said: “Over the past four days, I’ve talked to three separate people, who are connected in some way, to what is going on over at Warner Bros. They’re telling me that Ben Affleck, make no mistake, he does want out. He doesn’t want to be Batman anymore. I have been told that Affleck is talking with Warner Bros. in an attempt to get out of being Batman.” Neither Warner Bros., DC Entertainment or Ben Affleck comment on the rumours.
  • February 17th 2017 – The Hollywood Reporter brings news that negotiations between Matt Reeves and Warner Bros. have broken down. Reeves exits the director’s chair and The Batman becomes director-less once more.

And that’s where we are up to at present. Ben Affleck and Joe Manganiello are still on board the project, but The Batman does not have a director. We expect more news to follow this, especially as Batman is such an important property for Warner Bros., but for now, you’re up to date on the situation.

Since posting, there has been a new development.

February 23rd 2017 – Warner Bros makes it official – Matt Reeves WILL direct The Batman. Reeves will also serve as a producer on the new standalone movie. In a statement, Reeves said: “I have loved the Batman story since I was a child. He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honoured and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen.”

So, there we go. Affleck and Manganiello are on board. And so is Reeves.

Until next time, take care.
