Review: The Toys That Made Us: Season One

By Alex Wiggan

Taking an in-depth look at the most iconic toy lines of yesteryear, The Toys That Made Us is a new eight-part TV show featuring the likes of He-Man, Transformers and more. The first four episodes of Season One just arrived on Netflix, covering Star Wars, Barbie, Masters of the Universe and G.I. Joe and they are all as entertaining as they are informative.

If you loved the toys of your youth, you’re a toy collector now or you’re just looking for a fun, yet interesting docu-show this Christmas, then The Toys That Made Us is for you. Each episode details the inception of one chosen toy line; offers background information, key insights and all the highs and lows of being in the toy biz; and answers the all-important question: How did He-Man get his name?

All four episodes are on par with each other, so even if one of the aforementioned toys simply isn’t your thing, don’t worry, you’ll still get a kick out of learning about the line. In fact, the less you know about each toy the better.

With a show like this it would be easy for The Toys That Made Us to become very repetitive very quickly, with each episode presenting the same old story of toy manufacturers making it big, however, that’s simply not the case. For example, the opening episode highlights the gamble that was taken by Kenner on the Star Wars line (a gamble which paid off big), while the Barbie episode demonstrates just how ruthless manufacturing fashion dolls can be. The third episode – focusing on He-Man – looks at the ups and downs of a fledgling line and episode four connects the popularity of G.I. Joe with American patriotism.

By the end of these first four episodes you’ll be itching to watch the next four. The only downside is that the next four episodes won’t drop until 2018.

Ah well, for now dive into these four gems and transport yourself to a time when Toys ruled your world. You won’t regret a moment spent in the company of old friends.
