Eight things we know about Wolverine 3 – and two rumours

By Alex Wiggan

If you’re an X-Men fan, we reckon you’ll have seen X-Men: Apocalypse by now. What did you think? The reviews for X-Men: Apocalypse have not been great, but the response so far on social media has been fairly mixed.

Well, regardless of what you feel about this most recent entry in the X-Men series, another X-Men film is on the horizon. Yep, nothing can stop the X-Men series at the moment, so expect to see a lot more from Professor X and Co over the coming years.

The next chapter in the series is the as-yet-untitled third Wolverine movie (we’ll call it Wolverine 3 for now). Wolverine 3 is currently in production and before you know it will be arriving in your local multiplex to become the 10th X-Men film from 20th Century Fox.

Details about the movie are fairly scarce, but a few key pieces of information have been trickling out here and there. And that’s where we come in.

Here at the Honcho-SFX blog, we’ve rounded up all the best bits of info and have presented them to you in an easily digestible format. We’ve called it: Eight things we know about Wolverine 3 – and two rumours.

Tuck in!

1) Principal photography began on Wolverine 3 in May 2016, with James Mangold once again calling the shots as the movie’s director. Mangold helmed the second Wolverine solo movie, The Wolverine (2013). So, if you liked The Wolverine, you should expect more of the same.

2) Barring any changes of heart, Wolverine 3 will mark the last time Hugh Jackman plays the character of Wolverine. Speaking on the Dr. Oz show back in 2015, Jackman said:

“It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let’s be honest, 17 years. I never thought in a million years it would last, so I’m so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it. I kind of have in my head what we’re going to do in this last one. It just feels like this is the perfect way to go out.”

3) Wolverine 3 will be an R-rated movie. **Cough** Can anyone say Deadpool-influence? **Cough**

Speaking to Collider in May 2016, producer Simon Kinberg, said: “It is an R-rated movie. It’s violent; it’s kind of like a western in its tone. It’s just a very cool, different film.”

4) Sir Patrick Stewart will reprise the role of Professor Charles Xavier in Wolverine III. The character’s appearance has been the source of rumour for some time, but it has now been confirmed, firstly by producer Hutch Parker and then by Sir Patrick Stewart, who Tweeted out the following: “Worst kept secret. #ProfessorX #Wolverine3.”

5) In addition to Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart, the cast of Wolverine 3 will include Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Eriq La Salle, Boyd Holbrook and Elise Neal.

6) Wolverine 3 will be set in the future, with the story based on a very popular fan-favourite comic book. Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con back in 2015, Jackman said:

“I’ve got three words for you guys: Old Man Logan.”

7) This take on Old Man Logan will differ from the Old Man Logan seen in comics, as it won’t feature the same Marvel characters that appear in the book. The reason for this is quite simple: 20th Century Fox only don’t own the rights to use any non-X-Men characters, so don’t expect to see the Hulk cropping up. However, according to Mark Millar, the author of Old Man Logan, the omission of certain characters shouldn’t be a problem as “they’re not important to the story.”

Speaking to IGN in September 2015, Millar said:

“Basically Wolverine doing the road movie is the important thing and he has a friend (a blind Hawkeye) with him. But that friend could be Cyclops and he could be blind by the fact that his ruby-quartz visor is broken and he has to keep his eyes closed the whole time and everything, but still insists on driving the car they’re crossing America with. There’s lots of stuff. Instead of the Hulk, you could have the Blob or something.

“Honestly, the continuity stuff is the most boring side of it. I kind of like it, keeping it in the X-Men universe a little, too, because comic fans are different from the mainstream world. I know this stuff backwards because I’ve lived my whole life loving this stuff, but most people don’t know all the minutia and everything so I think keeping it simplified and keeping it generally X-Men universe is a smarter thing to do.”

8) Wolverine 3 is scheduled for release in the US on March 3rd 2017. Expect a UK release date to fall either side of this date.

WolverineAnd now for those rumours…

9) According to the Nerdist, the chief villains of Wolverine 3 will be the Reavers – a group of cyborgs. As of yet, this has not been confirmed, but the Nerdist is pretty sure it is likely to pan out.

10) **SPOILER** Following the post credit scene in X-Men: Apocalypse, which references Mister Sinister, there is a lot of speculation that this next Wolverine movie will feature Wolverine’s female clone, X-23. Heck, what did you think Sinister wanted that blood for if not to create a clone?
