Blog post revisited: What happened next for The Punisher, Blade & Ghost Rider?

By Alex Wiggan

Today’s blog post is a follow-up to a post we published waaaaaay back in November 2014, titled: ‘What next for The Punisher, Blade & Ghost Rider?’ The original blog post looked at five different Marvel characters who were, at the time of writing, missing from the Marvel Cinematic Universe following a short spell at another movie studio.

Of course, that was then.

Flash forward to the present day and some of those characters have now made their debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

So today we thought it would be fun to revisit our earlier post to take a look at what we predicted and what came to pass. And we must point out that when we wrote the original blog post none of the characters had been confirmed for a reappearance in the MCU. Sure, we knew they would come back at some point, but there was no indication of when or where they would resurface.

So did any of our predictions come true?

Read on to find out.

What we said in November 2014: ‘Of all the characters who were leased out by Marvel, this one is perhaps the most likely to appear next, given her connection to Daredevil who is set to reappear in 2015 via his own Netflix show. Although no official announcement has been made regarding the character’s reappearance, the character is now a part of Marvel Studio’s portfolio and so is a shoe-in for an appearance alongside Daredevil.’

Current status: Well we were pretty much bang on with this one.

As predicted, Elektra’s connection to Daredevil pretty much guaranteed her a spot on DD’s show and the character appeared during the show’s second season, which aired earlier this year.

The Punisher

The Punisher

What we said in November 2014: ‘Having starred in three movies already, the Punisher certainly has enough audience appeal to warrant a solo show, but let’s not forget that not one of his movies has taken off in the same way that say the X-Men or Captain America movies have. Therefore reintroducing the character under the radar as a guest star in say, Daredevil or Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, would perhaps make more sense.’

Current status: Boom! We’re two for two! We figured Marvel would go down the TV route to re-introduce the Punisher and they did! The Punisher appeared on the second season of Daredevil and proved so popular he’s now been given his own series on Netflix.

What we said in November 2014: ‘Of all the reacquired characters Blade is perhaps the one who will sit things out the longest. Blade has already had a stab (no pun intended) at the small screen and although this show wasn’t connected to Marvel Studios’ output, it does mean that perhaps audiences aren’t clamouring for a Blade TV show right now. Going back to what Kevin Fiege said about Marvel reacquiring the rights to characters (“we want to do the smart thing at the smart time”), this would suggest it could be more of a timing issue for a character like Blade.

Current status: Well we predicted that we’d wait the longest for the reappearance of Blade and his absence only confirms our initial thoughts. At the time of writing this follow-up post we’ve still not heard anything concrete about Blade’s return. We remain forever hopeful that something will be announced sooner rather than later, but in the meantime we still believe this is a timing issue.

Ghost Rider

Ghost Rider

What we said in November 2014: ‘We wouldn’t rule out an appearance from GR in a forthcoming movie, even if it is just a cameo similar to that seen by Howard the Duck in this year’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Using a little CGI on an unknown actor’s face would allow for a hush-hush walk on role that would remind fans that Ghost Rider is still knocking around. Of course, an easier option would be to team up Blade and Ghost Rider for a supernatural TV series, with the Punisher thrown in for good measure.’

Current status: We were a little off with this one, but we were at least circling the right area… kind of. As confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con 2016, Ghost Rider will make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, via a guest role on the fourth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Prince Namor

What we said in November 2014: After discussing some legal technicalities surrounding Namor, we said: ‘For now we’d file Namor under the ‘he’ll remain in the comics’ file.’

Current status: Still no word on Prince Namor and to be honest no one really seems to be talking about him either. This pretty much means the character is firmly on the back burner for now, so we stand by our original assessment that this one will remain in comics for the foreseeable future. Our bet? He’ll appear in a later phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, just don’t expect to hear anything about it in a while.

So of all five heroes, we didn’t do a bad job of predicting what would happen with these characters, even if those predictions meant nothing much would happen! Moving forward, we really hope Blade gets another shot at the big time, possibly in some kind of multiverse adventure that allows the Marvel Cinematic Universe to incorporate New Line Cinema’s previous Blade movies, thus allowing Wesley Snipes the opportunity to reprise the role of Blade. We can but dream.

In the meantime, as we’re so good at predicting the future, we will shorty be predicting next week’s winning Lotto balls, so watch this space.
