And the next comic book movies are…

By Alex Wiggan

Doctor Strange, the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has arrived in cinemas and this means we’ve finally reached the last comic book movie to be released in 2016 – boo! But fear not, 2017 is not far off and this means there’s still a whole host of comic book movies and superhero flicks coming your way.

Frankly, it is an obscene amount – and we love it!

So today, we’re taking a look at what’s in store for Marvel fans, DC lovers and everything in between. Aren’t we good to you?

Kicking things off in February, DC/Warner releases the hotly anticipated The Lego Batman Movie. The film – which is a sort-of-spin-off from 2014’s The Lego Movie – is directed by Chris McKay and features a voice cast that includes Will Arnett, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson and Ralph Fiennes.

Moving into March we’ve got Logan, the final Wolverine solo-movie; Power Rangers; and Ghost in the Shell movie. We’ve talked about Logan a fair bit on the Honcho-SFX blog, so let’s take this opportunity to talk about Power Rangers and Ghost in the Shell.

Although Power Rangers is a reboot, this is still the third film in the Ranger franchise following Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers (1995) and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie (1997). The film is directed by Dean Israelite and features a cast that includes Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa and Bryan Cranston as Zordon!

Yep, Bryan Cranston as Zordon!!!

Meanwhile, Ghost in the Shell is a live-action take on the popular manga series of the same name. Written by Jonathan Herman & Jamie Moss, the film is directed by Rupert Sanders and features Scarlett Johansson and Juliette Binoche amongst its cast.

May brings just one comic book movie, but it’s a biggie – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. James Gunn is back in the director’s chair, with Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradly Cooper, Michael Rooker and Karen Gillan all returning for another adventure in space.

We’re very excited about the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, however, we’d be lying if we didn’t tell you that we’re equally excited about the next big comic book movie of the year – Wonder Woman! Gal Gadot takes to the big screen to bring DC’s iconic heroine to life in a movie which will either be the greatest superheroine movie ever, or a crashing disappointment. We remain ever hopeful. Wonder Woman arrives in June 2017.

Moving into July, another classic character hits the big screen and it’s one who we’ve seen a fair few times before – yep, it’s Spidey! Starring Tom Holland as Marvel’s most famous character, Spider-Man: Homecoming is a collaboration between Sony and Marvel Studios and promises to be much better than the last Spider-Man film, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). Well, it couldn’t be any worse now, could it?

Here at the Honcho-SFX blog we love Spider-Man so we really hope this film does the business and we’re quietly confident it will. With a new lead, a renewed energy and the promise that THIS ISN’T ANOTHER SPIDER-MAN ORIGIN STORY, Spider-Man: Homecoming could be the Spider-Man film we’ve waited more than a decade for. Fingers crossed.

And to wrap things up for 2017, November brings two more comic book movies; one from Marvel and one from DC.

The first movie is Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, which sees the Norse God of Thunder team-up with Marvel’s Jade Giant, the Hulk! The film – the third entry in the Thor series – will see Chris Hemsworth return to the role of Thor, joining a cast that includes Mark Ruffalo, Idris Elba, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett and Anthony Hopkins.

The second movie to hit cinemas in November is Justice League. We’re just going to say this now – this film is likely to be HUGE!

Directed by Zack Snyder, Justice League will see Batman team-up with Wonder Woman, the Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman (as well as a newly resurrected Superman) for an epic adventure that promises to be the biggest DC movie so far.

And if all that wasn’t enough (and it never is), a collection of animated offerings are also landing in 2017, including Justice League Dark; Teen Titans: The Judas Contract; the as-yet-untitled Batman/Harley Quinn story; and a sequel to this year’s awesome, Batman: The Return of the Caped Crusader – Batman V Two-Face.

Batman: The Return of the Caped Crusader was brilliant, so we’re expecting more of the same from Batman V Two-Face. We also have high hopes for the long-delayed Teen Titans: The Judas Contract.

So there we are – this is what you can expect to see over the next year. We suggest you cancel your plans and prepare yourself to be happy/sad/indifferent at what is on offer.
